If our sons were to meet, your boy and mine
In that place where they have gone
Would they spend time together and become good friends
Like their moms left here have done?

A friendship born out of unthinkable loss
Is a gift we did not choose
But we know that we have each other
And with that, we cannot lose.

Are there friends in heaven? I like to think it’s true
And if there are, our sons would surely meet
With a hearty “OoRah!” and “Semper Fi!”
For the life they both knew

As gentlemen, they extended a hand
As they greet,
And look each other in the eye —
They know they were meant to meet.

If our sons were to meet,
How would they spend their time?
Would they share a beer
Or play a game of catch
Or talk about days gone by?

We can almost see them standing there,
In their dress blues, so handsome and sharp
To their Mama’s eyes they bring a tear
While pride fills their hearts.

If our sons were to meet,
What stories would they share?
Their lives were once worlds apart,
But now a bond is there.

Where might they meet,
On the diamond or the court?
Giving a high-five
Each time one would score.

When they speak of their moms,
Surely, they would smile,
Recalling their love and devotion.
And somehow they could feel it still.
As their hearts filled with emotion.
Perhaps they would chat about their lives
And all they used to do.
Though far apart, one thing is was the same
Their hearts were good and true.

When they decided it was time to move on,
They’d wave a happy goodbye,
They would exchange another hearty “OoRah!”
And another “Semper Fi!”

They are part of us still,
Though life is different where they now reside,
But someday when our time has come,
We will join them on the other side.

But until then, we will stay strong,
As they would want us to.
For if our sons were to meet,
We hope we’d know it, too.
