Event Overview

The TAPS New York City Legacy Mentor Experience is specially designed for our Legacy Mentors (see eligibility guidelines below). TAPS participants will travel to New York City for a four-day intensive program where they will learn from leaders in finance, communications, sports and entertainment, and the consulting industries to guide them in their future professional endeavors. At each venue, Legacy Mentors will gain a unique perspective into the private, public and non-profit world through professional development, leadership and mentorship. Past events included visits with organizations such as the NFL, Macy’s, Good Morning America, CBS News, the New York Stock Exchange, New York Life and Booz Allen Hamilton.

The event will also provide cultural experiences with introductions to some of New York's most iconic landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, Times Square, Broadway, the Metropolitan Museum and the 9/11 Museum complex. The event will open pathways to future career choices, engage participants, broaden cultural experiences, and build new connections among leaders in the industry. Legacy Mentors will spend time together as we honor and remember our fallen heroes.

Lodging and Transportation

Flights, transportation, lodging, entry tickets and group meals will be provided through generous support from the NFL. Attendees will be responsible for incidentals (such as baggage fees, snacks, souvenirs, etc.)

Eligibility Guidelines

This opportunity is for TAPS Legacy Mentors; those survivors who have graduated from TAPS Youth Programs and now choose to give back by serving as a mentor to younger survivors grieving the loss of a military member. To be eligible to participate in this event, in addition to being a TAPS Legacy Mentor, attendees also must:

  • be at least 18 years of age,
  • have graduated high school, AND
  • have mentored for at least two TAPS events in the past five years.

Attendees must commit to attending all activities and meals and participate fully, to the best of their abilities, to be eligible for this trip.

Application Form Details

Those who are interested in attending should complete the online application form. The form will open on Monday, March 2 at 12:00 a.m. (Eastern) and close when 50 applications have been received or on Tuesday, March 10 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern), whichever comes first.

Although TAPS would love for all Legacy Mentors to attend, we have a very limited amount of spots available. If there are more applications than spots, this opportunity will be filled via a selection process. Those who have attended a trip or a TAPS event where flights and lodging have both been provided (not including Seminars) will have a lower priority. Those who attended the 2018 and 2019 TAPS New York City Legacy Mentor Experience are not eligible to participate this year. Applicants will be notified the week of March 23 if they have been selected to attend.

If you have any questions, please email experiences@taps.org or call 202-588-8277 and ask for Jessica in Survivor Experiences.
