Alaska Iditarod Survivor Experience
All surviving adults 18 years of age or older grieving the loss of a loved one who served in the Armed Forces are warmly invited to join TAPS for our Alaska Iditarod Survivor Experience.
Health Guidelines: TAPS will make every effort to ensure safe and healthy gatherings. We will continue to monitor COVID variants and may require testing onsite and/or other protocols based on local regulations and CDC guidance. At this time, we do not require proof of full vaccination and masks are optional. Should we have to make any changes you will be notified right away.
Step away from the daily stressors of life and immerse yourself in a safe environment to help you connect with yourself, your loved one and others who understand. Explore Alaska, create new bonds and celebrate your fallen hero. You’ll learn to focus on yourself and be in the moment.
Move beyond your comfort zone with the support of others who understand at the Alaska Survivor Experience.
Day 1: Wednesday is your travel day. TAPS staff will be available to greet you and we will have an informal welcome reception, but there is no formal programming this day.
Days 2 to 4: We will participate in group activities, meals, cultural experiences and remembrance that will connect you with other survivors. There will be physical activities, such as extensive walking throughout the city, along with an optional 3 block dash, "Running with the Reindeer."
Day 5: Sunday, following breakfast, TAPS staff still will be available to bid you farewell. There is no programming or activities on this day.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, TAPS will provide lodging, activities and most meals at no cost to you. Continental breakfast, dinners and one lunch will be provided. We will participate in Alaska dog sledding and experience the ceremonial start of the Iditarod in downtown Anchorage.
Lodging will be provided for all attendees at a hotel in downtown Anchorage. You'll share a room with another retreat attendee. TAPS covers the cost of lodging at no cost to you, and we'll take care of booking your lodging for the retreat.
You'll need to cover the cost of your transportation to and from Anchorage. Please do not make travel arrangements until you receive a welcome email after registering. Once your registration is accepted, your flight must be purchased and confirmed by February 1, 2023.
Applications are open until December 30, 2022. Applicants will be notified of selection as soon as possible. Applicants not initially selected to attend will be placed on a waitlist and notified as space becomes available.
