State Survivor Benefits For Georgia

Georgia’s Hero Scholarship

ELIGIBILITY

  • Children and unremarried spouses
  • Children must be under the age of 25 to receive benefits
  • Service member must have served in a combat zone, any cause of death during or after combat service is covered; this does include suicide
  • Service member must have been a Georgia state resident at time of death, student must be a Georgia state resident at time of application
  • Can be used with federal benefits
  • Benefits must be started within two years of gaining eligibility (for spouses)

BENEFITS

  • Award of up to $2,000 per year and a maximum of $8,000 over four years
  • Must be used at a Georgia state-funded post-secondary institution
  • Can only be used for undergraduate degrees, with a maximum of four years of benefits

DOCUMENTS

  • Copy of DD1300 or DD214
  • Copy of student's birth certificate
  • Copy of marriage certificate for spouses
  • Copy of service member's death certificate
  • Proof of selective service registration
