- Our Helpline is a 24/7 operation. Candidates must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule. This includes regular assignment to, or rotation through, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.
Description
This position is responsible for handling calls from all those who contact the Helpline — survivors grieving the loss of a loved one who reach out 24/7 to TAPS for comfort, care, resources, and information, as well as professionals and other callers. The TAPS National Military Survivor Helpline calls are answered live around the clock to meet the needs of any person grieving the death of a loved one in the military, regardless of their relationship to the deceased or the location or circumstances of the death.
As a member of the Helpline team, you will play a critical role in providing a warm connection and directing survivors to the full continuum of TAPS support, including peer-based emotional support, casework assistance, grief counseling, and community-based resources.
Job Functions
- Handles telephone calls, chats, emails, and service requests in an effective, professional, and compassionate manner.
- Provides grief support, guidance, direction, and appropriate connection to follow up with TAPS programs, services, and staff.
- Documents all contacts with survivors in the TAPS survivor database.
- Provides detailed reports on all calls handled.
Qualifications
- Military survivor strongly preferred; military family member required.
- College degree in psychology, social work, counseling, human services, or a related field (advanced degree a plus).
- 3-5 years experience in the field or in a related area of caregiving and response services.
- Highly motivated, compassionate team player with demonstrated commitment to TAPS.
- Patient and nonjudgmental approach to supporting individuals experiencing grief and trauma.
- Able to handle callers in crisis in a calm manner and connect to appropriate resources.
- Able to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Able to troubleshoot, identify viable options and problem-solve.
- Able to effectively handle multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Comfortable learning and utilizing database, VOIP, and additional communication platforms.
- Must possess a professional demeanor and excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

Start Date: Immediate
Salary: $45,000–$50,000
Benefits: TAPS provides a range of benefits and three weeks of paid vacation per year.
