State Survivor Benefits For North Carolina

State Benefit Class I-A


  • Children only
  • Children must be under the age of 25
  • Service members cause of death must be ruled line of duty
  • Service member must have been a North Carolina state resident at time of entry into service, student must be a North Carolina state resident
  • Service members residency requirements are waived if student was born in and has maintained residency in North Carolina
  • Can be used with federal benefits


  • Waiver of full tuition and certain fees at any North Carolina state funded postsecondary institution
  • Includes a room and board allowance
  • $4,500 per year towards a private postsecondary institution in North Carolina
  • Can only be used towards undergraduate degrees
  • Maximum of 4 years of benefits and must be used within 6 years of application


  • Copy of DD1300 or DD214
  • Copy of service members death certificate
  • NCDVA- 17 (application for benefits)
  • NCDVA-18 (financial questionnaire)
  • Federal tax return
  • Copy of students birth certificate
  • Selective Service registration for men
  • Copy of most recent transcripts

Application due date: June 1st for fall, December 1st for spring
