Military Service Recognition Scholarship


  • Children, unremarried spouses and stepchildren (if service member claimed them on taxes)
  • Service member must have been killed in action in a warzone or died in a training accident that was related to training for a warzone
  • Service member must have been a New York state resident at time of death
  • Cannot be used with federal benefits, but can be offset by state TAP benefits


  • Full coverage of actual tuition or the equivalent of SUNY tuition whichever is less
  • Stipend for room, board, books, fees and transportation costs
  • Can only be used towards undergraduate degree
  • Student must be enrolled full time
  • Maximum of 4 years of benefits


  • Copy of DD1300 or DD214
  • Proof of dependency (military ID or proof of shared finances)
  • Copy of service members death certificate
  • Copy of birth certificate for children
  • Copy of marriage license for spouses
  • Service members tax form for stepchildren
  • Completed FASFA and New York Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
