State Survivor Benefits For Virginia

Military Survivors Education Program

ELIGIBILITY

  • Children and unremarried spouses
  • Children must use between the ages of 16 and 29
  • Service member must have been killed as a result of military service in an armed conflict on or after December 6, 1941, Suicides are covered provided it can be proved that they were service connected (PTSD)
  • Either the service member or their spouse must have been a Virginia resident for at least 5 years (residency can be established after death for survivors)
  • Can be used with federal benefits

BENEFITS

  • Waiver of tuition and fees
  • Stipend for books, room and board
  • Can be used for a maximum of 4 years
  • Must be used at Virginia state funded postsecondary institution

DOCUMENTS

  • Copy of DD 1300 or DD214
  • Copy of student’s birth certificate
  • Copy of service members death certificate
  • Copy of marriage certificate for spouses
  • Proof of residency
  • Varies case by case

Application due date: None, but takes 30 days to process
