State Survivor Benefits For Tennessee

Dependents of Certain Veterans

ELIGIBILITY

  • Children, stepchildren (if DEERS eligible) and unremarried spouses
  • Children must be under 23 years of age, spouses have 10 years from time of service members death to use benefits
  • Service member must have been killed in action
  • Service member must have died during a period of declared war
  • Service member must have been a Tennessee state resident at time of death, student must be a Tennessee state resident at time of application
  • Can be used with federal benefits

BENEFITS

  • Waiver of full tuition and certain fees
  • Does not cover room, board or books
  • Must be used at a Tennessee state funded postsecondary institution
  • Can only be used for undergraduate degrees

DOCUMENTS

  • Copy of DD1300 or DD214
  • Copy of service members death certificate
  • Copy of marriage license for spouses and stepchildren
  • Proof of residency
  • Most recent transcripts for current college students or letter of acceptance for high school students
  • FASFA
