Good Grief Camps and Family Camps

Good Grief Camps

At TAPS seminars (both regional and national), Good Grief Camp (GGC) is offered for children and teenagers grieving the death of a military family member.

Children and teenagers are assigned to peer groups where they are able to openly talk about and express their grief, learn coping skills, and develop connections with other surviving youth who are grieving similar losses. Each child and teenager is paired with a Military Mentor, an active duty or veteran military member, who has been trained to offer support and encouragement to Good Grief Camp participants throughout the weekend.

Good Grief Camp Eligibility Criteria

  • Children or teenagers grieving the death of a parent/primary caregiver or sibling who served in the United States Armed Forces.
  • Children or teenagers who are grieving the death of an aunt, uncle, or other family member MAY also be eligible if they had an active relationship with the person who died, and they are impacted by and grieving the person’s death.
  • Children ages 5 years old and attending in kindergarten through teenagers under the age of 19 or enrolled in high school.
  • All Children must be potty trained and must have a parent or guardian registered, onsite, and attending the event.

Family Camps

These special weekends are planned throughout the year for families with children ages 5 years old and enrolled in kindergarten through teenagers under the age of 19 or enrolled in high school and who are  actively grieving the death of a military family member.

Family Campouts provide a setting for building communication, understanding, and support within the family unit. Participants of all ages meet in both peer groups and family groups, and participate in traditional camp activities like zip lining, water activities, low ropes and high ropes challenges, and campfire fun, all while creating special opportunities for family bonding.

Family Camp Eligibility Criteria

  • Families with children ages 5 years old and attending in kindergarten through teenagers under the age of 19 or enrolled in high school, and who are grieving the death of a family member who served in the United States Armed Forces.
  • Young adult children may attend with their family if other children in the family meet the age criteria for eligibility.
  • Family members not actively grieving are eligible to attend, including spouses, significant others, or other children living in the household, as family campouts focus on communication, understanding, and support within the family unit.
