TAPS Survivors at Empowerment retreat

Part of the grief journey is learning how to carry the weight of heavy emotions; part of it is learning to manage those emotions so that we can still live rich and fulfilling lives. Each coping skills workshop in this series is designed to help participants learn through expression and/or experience, all while supported by an encouraging community.

This workshop will be part discussion, part crowdsourcing, and part restorative movement and breath practice. We'll start with an exploration of our own stress responses and share some of the ways that we can practice healthy nervous system regulation. We'll conclude with breath practice and experiment with body positions that might help us interrupt the cycle of stress and return to a place of safety and comfort. 

 

Schedule

Coping skills sessions occur on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 12 p.m. Eastern. These online sessions are NOT recorded. The schedule below will be updated regularly as sessions are finalized. It is tentative and subject to change.

What to Expect

Creative Expression Sessions

In our creative expression sessions, we invite you to join us for a time of peace, inspiration and creation.  This space is for you to come exactly as you are and allow yourself to see what shows up on the page through guided projects and prompts.  These two hour sessions will be broken up into three parts; instruction, time to create and the opportunity to share.  No art or writing experience is necessary and all levels are welcome!  Although recommended supplies will be emailed out by your instructor before each session, please know that no fancy supplies are needed.  At minimum, all you need is something to write or draw with, a piece of paper and a willing spirit to listen to your own inner voice as well as the stories of your fellow survivors.

Mindfulness, Movement, or Community Workshops

While each session will vary depending on what the focus is (examples are everything from movement, breath work, and mindfulness to ritual, meaning making, and community discussion), you can expect an experience that's accessible for all levels and at all stages of the grief journey. Comfort is key. We recommend private spaces, comfortable clothes, a journal, and an open mind. Occasionally, we may recommend some specialized tools or props - sometimes there are tools we can use to enhance the experience. Registered participants will receive an overview of upcoming sessions, including information from each presenter about what's needed to make the most out of each workshop.

 

Community Guidelines

We ask that you log onto Zoom 5 minutes prior to each session as we will start our online group promptly at start time listed above. Please review our Community Guidelines to one another in advance of joining. Admission to each session will close to admission at 10 minutes after the start time.

 

How to Participate

  • All sessions require registration through TAPS Zoom Account (look for the blue sign up button at the top of this page).
  • All sessions will take place via Zoom. Meeting access information will be sent to you after you sign up.
  • Reminder emails will be sent before each session.
