All adult survivors 18 and older are invited to join TAPS for our Intro to Running Training Camp.

The TAPS Inner Warrior Program will help you find and connect with a part of you that’s committed not just to surviving, but thriving. We’ll build resolve and courage and get stronger every day.

TAPS Survivor Running in a Race

Overview

Running is about more than just moving forward — it’s about training your mind, learning how to move through a healthy level of discomfort, knowing when to rest and listen to what your body needs, and creating and using a strong, flexible and mobile body. It’s also about finding community, setting goals, committing to the effort and feeling a sense of accomplishment.

Redefine yourself as a runner, an athlete and a healthy mover at the Intro to Running Training Camp. If you’re new to running, we’ll show you how to get started. If you’ve been lacing up your shoes but are feeling less than confident or finding yourself continuously injured and sore, we’ll help you understand how to train, move and stay healthy.

We’ll have workshops on heart rate zone training, mobility work, running form, gear and attire, choosing training plans to fit your goals, strength training, injury prevention, nutrition, live chats with accomplished runners throughout the country, and more.

We encourage participants to select a goal event for 2018 for which to train. We'll teach you how to train for a targeted race distance of your choice (starting with 5K distance through road marathon and trail runs) and how to make running part of your lifestyle. Team TAPS staff will also be available to answer your questions about training for the Marine Corps Marathon and the Army Ten-Miler. Make sure to check out the Team TAPS race schedule

Schedule

Day 1: We’ll start by learning how to find inspiration in ourselves and in each other. You’ll get an overview of the weekend and a chance to ask questions.

Day 2: The second day will start early with a run/walk (wherever you are in your running journey, it’s OK — even if you’re at the walking part!), information on stretching, warming up and cooling down. We’ll move into sessions on supportive core, mobility and strengthening exercises. We’ll round out the day with discussions of habituation, motivation, supportive nutrition, hydration and injury prevention.

Day 3: A run or run/walk session will start the day. Afterward, we’ll talk about races and athletic conditioning. We’ll work through training plans, help you set goals and connect you with your training group. You’ll have everything you need to make the next few months successful and create this version of yourself.

Training Camp Fees

Thanks to the generosity of our donors and sponsors, TAPS will cover lodging, most meals, transportation while at the camp, coaches, expert workshops, activities and a T-shirt.

You'll be expected to cover the cost of your transportation to and from the event, some meals and your running gear (shoes, etc.).

Lodging and Transportation

The training camp will be held at the beautiful Pearlstone Center right outside of Baltimore in rural Reisterstown, Maryland, featuring sprawling green grounds and farm-to-table meals.

Lodging will be provided for all attendees at the retreat center. You'll share a room with another event attendee. TAPS covers lodging at no cost to you, and we'll take care of booking your lodging for the event.

You'll need to cover the cost of your transportation to and from Reisterstown. Participants should plan to be at the retreat center by mid-afternoon on Friday, May 4, and stay through the afternoon on Sunday, May 6. Please do not make travel arrangements until you receive a confirmation email after registering. Once registered, we'll send you a welcome email that will have information about flight itineraries, packing lists, cancellation policies and additional event details.

Skill Level

While none of the training camp workouts require the ability to run or run/walk a certain distance or pace, participants should be mobile, motivated and medically cleared to participate in the exercises. We encourage participants to choose a race to complete this year.

Registration Details

Registration is now open and is conducted on a first come, first served basis. A waitlist will form once registration has reached capacity. Inner Warrior events fill up quickly, so we encourage you to register now!
