State Survivor Benefits For Maine

ELIGIBILITY

• Children, stepchildren (if parents have been married for more than 5 years) and unremarried spouses
• Children must enroll prior to 22nd birthday
• Service member must have been killed in action or died of a service connected disability on or after September 11, 2001
• Service member must have entered service or been a resident for 5 years prior to death. 5 year rule can be waived if family has lived in Maine for at least 5 years after death
• Can be used with federal benefits

BENEFITS

• 6 years or 120 credit hours of tuition and fees waived
• No room or board covered
• Must be used at an Maine state funded postsecondary institutions
• Can be applied towards masters programs

DOCUMENTS

• Copy of DD214 military record
• Copy of student’s birth certificate
• Marriage certificate for spouses and step-children
• Copy of service members death certificate
• Proof of residency for at least 5 years
