Military Mentor Manager

Reports to: Youth Programs Manager

 

RESPONSIBILITES

This position is responsible for managing and coordinating Military Mentor participation for Youth Programs events, including but not limited to: recruitment, communications, training, and recognition.  The manager will proactively seek to develop relationships with military leadership at key installations nationwide to strengthen collaboration in support of TAPS bereaved military children. 

Mission Statement: To companion the grieving children of America’s Fallen Heroes with a compassionate and professional one-to-one connection to develop positive grief coping skills, build feelings of safety and stability in their grief, and remembrance that their fallen hero is honored and remembered for their life and service.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • TAPS Military Mentor Program
    • Identify and develop close working relationship with military installations to provide mentors
    • Develop systems for families to request mentors
    • Collaborate with Volunteer Manager and Youth Programs team to disseminate information
    • Prepare monthly reports on the Military Mentor Program
    • Ability to attract and retain Military Mentors
    • Ability to thoroughly vet Military Mentor applicants to ensure suitability for serving as a Military Mentor
    • Develop strategies and programs to enable Military Mentors to maintain engagement with TAPS between Youth Program opportunities
    • Develop program to recognize and celebrate Military Mentor engagement
    • Partner with mental health professionals to ensure all Military Mentor programs are in alignment with research-based best practices
    • Foster social networking between Military Mentors
    • Ensure the Military Mentor program promotes wellness and improved coping skills for all Military Mentors
  • Mentor Communications
    • Respond promptly to all mentor inquiries
    • Maintain confidentiality in communication between Military Mentors
    • Develop and maintain positive rapport with mentors
    • Manage the mentor registration database
    • Use surveys to gather data for improving the program, publication and presentations
  • Mentor Training
    • Coordinate in-person and online mentor training
    • Collaboratively create unique online mentor training opportunities
    • Provide training to promote a safe environment for the mentor and mentee
  • Youth program events
    • Attend Youth Programs and Good Grief Camp events
    • Provide support, feedback, and encouragement to mentors throughout events
    • Enter all event feedback into mentor registration pages and follow up as needed

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Has served TAPS as a Military Mentor
  • Must be a military veteran with thorough knowledge of military structure and protocols
  • Preferred degree in business management, leadership, and/or education
  • Experience and education in with social work or counseling is appreciated
  • Has education/training in childhood grief and trauma or is willing to complete training
  • Has experience building programs and motivating large groups toward a common goal or is willing to complete training on research-based best practices for building programs to engage large groups
  • Charismatic and respected among peers
  • Proficient in Microsoft products
  • Proficient in Google Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
  • 2-5 years of experience in program development and management
  • Must be creative, accurate, and detailed oriented
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Flexible and able to prioritize competing priorities, with strong work ethic
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and be physically active during events
  • Ability to work from TAPS Headquarters and willing to travel
  • Available full time
