The Real Love Story in "Big Miracle" The love story between a White House staffer and an Army National Guard colonel depicted in "Big Miracle" is based on the real-life romance between Bonnie Carroll and her husband, Tom. The Carrolls met during the real whale rescue in the late 80s, while Bonnie was working at the Reagan White House, over the phone. That initial phone call sparked a romance that led to marriage and happy years together. Unfortunately, Tom Carroll was killed in an Army National Guard plane crash in Alaska in 1992. Bonnie founded TAPS, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, to offer comfort and care to anyone grieving the death of someone who served in the military. Drew Barrymore, Dermot Mulroney (who plays Tom Carroll), Vinessa Shaw (who plays Bonnie Carroll) and Bonnie Carroll are interviewed.
