Captain Snyder graduated from The Citadel, Class of 1962, and was commissioned in the Regular Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in Armor. Following the basic course at Fort Knox, Kentucky, he was assigned to the 8th US Cavalry, and then stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. In July 1964, he was ordered to Vietnam as an advisor to the 4th Troop, 3rd Armored Cavalry Squadron, ARVN. He served in this capacity for approximately eight months before being wounded. After seven months at Walter Reed, he was medically retired for his wounds. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge.

Effective with his retirement, January 1966, Captain Snyder was employed by Army and Air Force Mutual Aid Association as the Assistant Secretary-Treasurer. Effective August 1980 he was promoted to Vice President and Secretary, in April 1983 to Vice President and Treasurer and in April 1987 was appointed President. He was awarded the coveted Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation in 1970.

Effective June 2000, he retired from Army and Air Force Mutual Aid Association to become the President and CEO of Armed Forces Services Corporation. This corporation is a spin off from Army and Air Force Mutual Aid Association of which he was President from April 1987 to June 2000.

Since the passage of the military Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) in September 1972, Captain Snyder has given numerous talks on this program. He also has written a number of articles regarding the integration of Social Security and VA benefits with SBP.

From 1975 to April 1981, he served as a member of the Army Chief of Staff Officer Retiree Council. From 1992-1996 he served on the Board of the Armed Forces Benefit Association Bank and is currently a Director on the Board of the Tragedy Assitance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and has served two tours as a Director of the National Association of Uniformed Services (NAUS). He also serves on the Finance Committee of the Army Historical Foundation, Inc. and has been appointed to the Board of Advisors of the National Military Family Association.

He presently resides in Arlington, Virginia, with his wife, Lorene. The Snyders have three sons, three daughters and five grandchildren.
