The Honorable William A. Chatfield

Director, Selective Service System

Hon. William A. Chatfield, of Texas, became the 11th Director of Selective Service on November 29, 2004, having been nominated by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He is directly responsible to the President for the management of the Selective Service System.

He commenced public service with the U.S. House of Representatives in the late Seventies. He has also served in several appointed positions of increasing responsibility in both terms of the Reagan Administration; at the Department of Defense, the Civil Aeronautics Board, the Office of Personnel Management, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Department of the Interior, and the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Prior to his appointment with Selective Service, Mr. Chatfield was engaged in government relations and public affairs consulting, with his firm in Washington, D.C.

He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, with 35 years of active duty and reserve service. He also was a black belt martial arts instructor in civilian life.
