Bereavement counseling is assistance and support to people experiencing emotional and psychological stress after the death of a loved one. Bereavement counseling includes a broad range of transition services, including outreach, counseling and referral services to family members.

TAPS is honored to partner with the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as other organizations, to assist you in finding the counseling services you need.

VET CENTERS

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers bereavement counseling to parents, siblings, spouses and children of Armed Forces personnel who died in service of their country. Also eligible are family members of reservists and National Guardsmen who die on duty. Counseling is provided at Vet Centers located in families’ communities. There is no cost for VA bereavement counseling.

Information about the Vet Centers is available at: www.vetcenter.va.gov/Bereavement_Counseling.asp.

GIVE AN HOUR

For individuals whose loved one was not Active Duty at the time of his or her death, TAPS can still provide connections to experienced grief and trauma counselors through Give an Hour. Give an Hour is nonprofit organization providing free mental health services to U.S. military personnel and families. TAPS is happy to connect surviving family members with counselors through the Give an Hour program.

Information about Give an Hour is available at: www.giveanhour.org.

Our Stories: General Grief
Bereavement Study
TAPS Magazine | One of the recurring themes of grief is the feeling of isolation, the sensation that we are alone in the world and that no one understands what we are going through. At some point many of us find a way to “give sorrow words” as William Shakespeare wrote more than 400 years ago. We find our voice and want to be assured that someone is listening. The National Military Family Bereavement Study (NMFBS), in partnership with TAPS and other organizations, gives surviving military families just that, the opportunity be heard in a nationwide research venue.

TAPS Blog | Before my husband died, Memorial Day was just another 3 day weekend that we got to celebrate his birthday (May 29th) with a fun adventure.  I never really thought about the importance of it and just enjoyed our time together.  Since his death however, Memorial Day has taken on a whole new meaning.
