Become a Retreat Host

Thank you so much for considering volunteering on a TAPS Retreat as a Retreat Host. The TAPS Retreats are designed to promote a time for peer connection, and personal challenge as well as fun.  The retreat host position is only for military survivors . If you are not a military survivor and would like to volunteer, check out our volunteer opportunities page.

Expectations for Retreat Hosts

The purpose of this position is to supplement TAPS staff as a volunteer. The retreat staff will be focused on the logistical side of things throughout the weekend and we look to you to make sure the participants are enjoying and experiencing the retreat. Please review the following expectations as you consider become a retreat volunteer:

  • Make sure that everyone is involved, help outsiders become engaged.
  • Assist with prep work before the retreat begins including putting together welcome bags, writing welcome cards, sorting through t-shirts, running to the store if needed for various items, etc.
  • Drive a rental van to shuttle participants throughout the weekend.
  • Be willing to be an airport greeter and waiting for long periods of times at the airport.
  • Be willing to work all day. Days can be long and most days, you will be working from breakfast until after dinner.
  • Report concerns about the emotional or physical safety about a participant to TAPS staff, don’t assume the responsibility on your own.
  • Be prepared to participate in all activities.
  • Be able to recognize the needs of the group. We are focusing on creating an amazing experience for all the new attendees and although we hope that everyone will be able to participate in all activities, we ask TAPS hosts to give up their space in an activity if time or other factors come up.
  • Be able to be in an emotional space where you are able to make conversations about the other survivors rather focusing on your loved one.
  • Represent TAPS. As a volunteer, you will be part of the TAPS team for the weekend and we ask that you remember all of your actions reflect on TAPS.
