Following the death of their only child, Rhonda, in 1980, Kay and her husband became involved with grief organizations but discovered that their unique needs as parents now childless were not being addressed. Along with another childless couple the Bevingtons founded Alive Alone, a support organization for bereaved parents whose only child, or all children, have died.
